Community Action’s Rental Housing Program provides quality, safe and affordable housing to low-income families.
Did you know that the accepted standard of affordability is having to pay no more than 30% of your income on rent? Consider this: Fair Market Rent on a 2-bedroom home in Shawnee County, KS is $713/month. In order to afford this unit and pay no more than 30%, an individual would need to make $13.71 per hour, or $28,520 per year.
Community Action has developed rental housing through programs such as the HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP) and the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program that provides below-market rents, so individuals and families who don’t have high incomes are able to afford rent, and still have money for things such as food, utilities, clothing and transportation.

WHY WE DO IT
There simply isn’t enough affordable housing for lower-income people. Too many families find themselves “house poor” and unable to afford other basic needs, let alone pathways to escape poverty.
According to HUD, there are only 78 affordable housing units available for every 100 Kansas households with incomes at or below 50% Area Median Income.
For every 100 households with incomes at or below 30% Area Median Income, the number of available units drops to 36.
An estimated 12 million households in the US now pay more than 50% of their incomes for housing.
DO I QUALIFY?
Many of our housing facilities are income-restricted. Please contact Community Action for more information.
